A very enjoyable day. We woke up at 6, after a cold, restless sleep; first night in the tent! We woke up. Old and with a lot of dew on the ground and our tent. Having no time to dry our tent out I put it in a garbage bag and packed it up. Realizing we weren't quite prepared for the cold nights after such a hot day, Sara and I decided to deviate from the route to make a stop at Walmart and get some sunscreen and pj pants, as we both had just shorts and sweats for pjs (sweats which we wanted to save for wearing in the evenings). It also just happened to turn out that it was a much flatter route than that which everyone else was taking, benefits of having a sister who know Abbotsford really well. We pulled out of the Abbotsford Walmart at 8am. We rejoined the designated route by Whatcom Rd and continued on. Several more km on, a small group caught up with us and joined us as we were all able to ride at about the same speed. Sara lead the way creating a pull, which is when a line of cyclists bike fairly close together with the first person creating a draft or pull for the rest of the riders. After our first rest stop which was on a Chilliwack farm's driveway on Chadsey Rd, we continued biking with those same cyclists 🚴 but started switching out the first person every 15 minutes or so, so that they'd have a break. We then had a rest stop supplied and hosted by the Chilliwack Cornerstone CRC. They provided us with delicious cookies, muffins and watermelon. Thank you so much to our hosts there! E continued on again with the same 5 riders. We maintained a pretty high speed with the tailwind. Crossing the Agassiz Rosedale bridge was a little sketchy. We were supposed to wait for a group of cyclists and then take a lane to cross. Just as we were about to cross, another large group of cyclists caught up which caused some confusion and we ended up crossing the bridge single file with about 20 cyclists. One Semi passed very close to us 😬. In Agassiz we stopped at the Agassiz Christian School (my old elementary school) where the kind Agassiz CRC hospitality committee provided soup and buns for lunch. Sara and I got to see some old friends and people we knew. We then continued the last 30 km to Hope. That stretch had a few hills, which I'm noticing I'm getting better at climbing, biking up the hill in Salmon Arm to school prepared me somewhat. One cyclist even commented that I had set a blistering pace (I was the lead at that point for the draft) over the bridge in Agassiz 🙊 oops! I was excited to reach Agassiz! We reached Hope by 1:40pm and set up our tent. My team is on supper prep duty this week, so at 3:30 we helped prepare for Taco Tuesday. We had like 7 - foot long tubes of ground beef to fry on 3 grills and then I had to cook/stir Spanish rice for a very long time in a tall pot on a very high up stove! My arm was sore doing it and I'm fairly tall so I don't know how they're going to expect anyone shorter to do it next time. We finished the day with a peloton meeting and a small group devotional. Sara and I are in bed now, going to sleep as soon as I finish this blog.
